I know that many of my readers find my blog when they’re looking for insights to A Course in Miracles. And I feel very humbled to hear how helpful you find my articles. A Course in Miracles is part of my everyday life, and even though I talk about it a lot here on the blog and in my weekly newsletter, in my private life, it’s something I practice more than I talk about it. It’s also become so second nature to me that I don’t even think about the fact that I start every day with a workbook lesson from the Course. But lately my appreciation of it has become very apparent in my life again. Because over the last few weeks, the daily lessons from A Course in Miracles have been particularly helpful for my peace of mind. I’ve been doing the daily workbook lessons for years now, and each round I make through the workbook offers new insights and blessings. I recently started from lesson 1 again, and those first few lessons, well, they turn a lot of people off from the experience. And I get it, when you come across them for the first time, they just sound so abstruse, and you’re like, “What does that have to do with anything?” But with every round I make through the workbook, I can see more and more how helpful they are. Especially this time around they have helped me tremendously.
Nothing I See Means Anything.
I have given everything I see all the meaning that it has for me.
I do not understand anything I see.
These thoughts do not mean anything.
When your mind is in fear, whatever form that fear might take, it’s usually not just one small, quiet thought that comes up every now and then. More often than not, it takes over your entire mind. It becomes ALL you can think about. It clutters your whole mind, and it’s hard for anything else to fit in there or to cut through that noise.
And recently, I’ve been in that state of mental clutter, when I happened to start another round of workbook lessons. And these lessons were the only thing that could cut through “the ego’s raucous screams and senseless ravings” as the Course would call it, and bring back my peace of mind. Four lessons, four days, and my mind was at peace again.
So often people talk about the value in “going back to basics”. I believe in that too. And that’s exactly what I needed. My mind was overflowing with clutter. Negative thoughts that took up my entire mental capacity. I needed to go back to basics, to remind myself that nothing I see means anything. This world and everything in it is entirely neutral. It’s us, you and me, who give meaning to everything. I had to remind myself that I have given everything I see all the meaning that it has for me. I’m the one who decided that these experiences were negative and worth giving up my peace of mind for. I had to remind myself that I do not understand anything I see. I think what I believe about a situation is fact, when actually, it’s only my perception. And I could change my perception. And if I did, I’d see that same situation very differently. And finally I had to remind myself that THESE THOUGHTS DO NOT MEAN ANYTHING! They are just thoughts. The chaos is in my mind, but on the outside, everything was calm and peaceful.
The still, small Voice for God is not drowned out by all the ego’s raucous screams and senseless ravings to those who want to hear It. Perception is a choice and not a fact. But on this choice depends far more than you may realize as yet. For on the voice you choose to hear, and on the sights you choose to see, depends entirely your whole belief in what you are.

I mean how often have you experienced this. Your mind goes crazy, you’re spiraling down into the negative thought abyss, you have the sickest visions and fears and worries, the craziest scenarios, the most horrendous ideas,… But actually, from the outside looking in, you’re safe at home in your bed in a quiet room. It’s all good. It is actually all good. It’s just your thoughts that are crazy. But these thoughts do not mean anything. You are safe.
And then you can apply that insight to anything, any situation. You get an email that makes you nervous – this email doesn’t mean anything. You’re upset about something someone said – those words don’t mean anything. You’re worried about whatever – those worries don’t mean anything. Your mind is racing because you’re stressed about an upcoming event – those thoughts don’t mean anything. And then the lessons continue, and you’re introduced to such valuable gems as,
I am never upset for the reason I think.
I am willing to see this differently.
I am determined to see this differently.
I could see peace instead of this.
And they become part of your tool belt, of your “problem-solving repertoire” as A Course in Miracles calls it. And when you’re upset or unsettled, you remember these thoughts, and they cut through the mental clutter, through the ego’s noise, through the drama, and bring you back to basics. Back to peace.
Life happens, upsetting things happen, shit happens, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. We are imperfect people living in an imperfect world, so there are bound to be negative experiences and negative thoughts every now and then. Even a happy life has some sad days. And the purpose of A Course in Miracles is not to cover up the pain, put your head in the sand, and pretend like it isn’t there or that this is not happening. The Course isn’t about just cramming everything into the back closet and locking the door. It actually helps us to take everything out of that closet, declutter what isn’t serving us, and bring order into our mental landscape. That’ why it’s so helpful. Because it doesn’t just suppress what we don’t want to deal with, it actually helps us to LET THOSE THINGS GO. Bye 👋
It’s like a detox for your mind. Being back in that state of constant worry for a couple of days, makes me appreciate how peaceful my mind usually is because . . . I used to live like this. With constant fears and worries overcrowding my mind. So I know how all of you feel who are sending me messages asking for advice. I really do. But more importantly, I know that it doesn’t have to be like this, that you can overcome this, and that there’s a way out. And that’s a very hopeful message indeed!
A Course in Miracles isn’t for everyone, but if it’s for you, you know it. So if it is, I encourage you to go for it. It is so helpful. If it is not for you, I encourage you to find some other daily practice. There are so many books, guides and even apps on the topic of mindfulness and peace of mind. Find one that speaks to you, and make it a daily habit. Like a morning shower for your mind. It is possible to cut through that noise. You just gotta face those thoughts and work on releasing them step by step, day by day.
Listen in deep silence. Be very still and open your mind. Go past all the raucous shrieks and sick imaginings that cover your real thoughts and obscure your eternal link with God. Sink deep into the peace that waits for you beyond the frantic, riotous thoughts and sights and sounds of this insane world. You do not live here. We are trying to reach your real home. We are trying to reach the place where you are truly welcome. We are trying to reach God.
