I receive a lot of questions about hearing your inner guidance. A lot of us really want to follow God’s guidance, the universe’s path for us, however you want to call it, but we don’t know how. There’s so much going on in our psyche that we can’t decipher between what’s real guidance and what’s just mental chatter. Add to that that for some of us there even is an element of fear involved, because who is this God that I’m surrendering my life to? How can I be sure that the universe wants what’s best for me and everyone involved? And what if I make a mistake and follow the ego’s guidance instead?
Okay, let’s start at the beginning. It is as though the mind is split in two. One part is the holy spirit, our inner guide, which is our direct communication link with the divine. This part is all about love. It is wise, calm, happy, and at peace. And following its guidance cultivates those same qualities in our lives. The other part is what A Course in Miracles calls the ego. It is all about fear and all the negative emotions that stem from fear. It is frantic, insane, and chaotic. And following its guidance cultivates those same qualities in our lives. Clearly, the guidance we want to follow is the guidance of the holy spirit aka our communication link with the divine by whatever name.
So when people say that they’re afraid of following God’s guidance, it’s really that their ego is afraid of following that guidance, and for a very specific reason. In the presence of the holy spirit, the ego dies. The ego is not real. The relationship of the ego and the holy spirit is like the relationship between darkness and light. Darkness isn’t an actual thing; it’s just the state in which light is missing. And as you know, as soon as you turn on the light, the darkness is gone without a trace by which to be remembered. There aren’t any “dark forces” because nothing in this world produces darkness. The sun produces light, but nothing could ever produce darkness. Light and darkness are like love and fear. In order to cancel out the fear, you have to turn on the love. In the presence of love, fear is impossible.
So because the ego is only concerned with its own preservation, it tells you that following divine guidance is dangerous, because it IS dangerous to the ego. The fear you’re feeling is the ego, mortified by the prospect of being annihilated.
You are afraid of this because you believe that without the ego, all would be chaos. Yet I assure you that without the ego, all would be love.

Some people just have a problem with phrases like “God’s guidance” because it doesn’t make sense to them or because they’re afraid they’re gonna start “hearing voices” if they ask for divine guidance. But in that case it’s just the way you view receiving divine guidance that’s causing your fear. If you changed your perception of it, the fear would dissolve. You can rephrase it to “following your intuition” or “following your heart” and realize that this is not a magic trick, but this is actually very natural and how life is supposed to be. We all have an intuition, an inner guide, an inner compass the leads us toward the light. We all intuitively know what to do in any given moment.
I love the concept of intuition because in my experience, everyone can relate to it. Everyone understands what I mean when I talk about intuition. Having God talk to you, or the holy spirit talk to you, or angels talk to you can feel like a very distant and abstract concept to many people. They can’t understand how a formless being could communicate with them. But when I talk about intuition, everyone gets it. Even though intuition is just that – a formless being communicating with you.
Everyone had these experiences where they followed their intuition – their inner voice, their inner compass, their heart – and everything worked out wonderfully against all odds. And everyone also had experiences where they didn’t follow their inner voice because it just wasn’t rational, they couldn’t see how that would work out, or maybe people around them told them that it was impossible or even insane. And then things didn’t work out, and it became clear that your intuition was right, and the most painful part about it was…that you knew better. You knew it! But you let the noise of the world drown out the gentle voice of your intuition and now you have to face the consequences. And you wish you could go back in time and just follow your heart.
That voice, that inner knowing, however you want to call it, that’s God’s guidance. It’s not something outside yourself, it’s nothing scary, it’s not even new. You’ve known that voice all your life, and now you’re just turning up the volume and actually listen to it and follow its guidance. And you KNOW it leads you always to the highest good for everyone involved. So what’s scary about that?
Remember, you can easily differentiate between the ego and your intuition because the ego is always manic, afraid, pushy, and chaotic whereas your intuition is very calm, gentle, wise and loving. Try following that loving voice in every decision you make for the next seven days and see what happens. See it as an experiment. I can promise you, you will be very happy with the results. And keep in mind, a daily meditation practice is key, because it clears your mind every morning, like a mental shower, so you can more easily hear the still, small voice for God. Just five minutes every morning will make a big difference. And that’s just 0.3% of your day! That’s a very small investment with dividends far beyond your expectations.
A Course in Miracles says the time you spend with the holy spirit every morning will be “returned to you in terms of years for every second; power to save the world eons more quickly for your thanks to Him.”
Is not five minutes but a small request to make in terms of gaining a reward so great it has no measure?
Give these five minutes gladly, to remove the heavy load you lay upon yourself.
Be still and listen to the truth today. For each five minutes spent in listening, a thousand minds are opened to the truth and they will hear the holy Word you hear.
We make the choice for Heaven as we wake, and spend five minutes making sure that we have made the one decision that is sane.
We waken hearing Him, and let Him speak to us five minutes as the day begins, and end the day by listening again five minutes more before we go to sleep.
Five minutes with this thought will be enough to set the day along the lines which God appointed, and to place His Mind in charge of all the thoughts you will receive that day.
