Continuing last week’s topic of God as I see Him, let’s talk more about the state of the world, what role we’re playing, and what role God’s playing. Remember when you were a little kid, you were still so pure and innocent and you believed that this world was a safe place? And remember when that belief system was shattered? I remember the exact moment when I realized that bad things are happening in the world, and that sometimes people do really, really messed up things. Before that I thought “bad people” were just a fantasy – something that only exists in stories. And I got really scared once I realized that wasn’t the case.
So I know that it sounds appealing to go back to that naive place, and to just live in your safe little bubble and not even know about all the pain that’s going on in the world. But I think it’s part of growing up and becoming more mature to widen your horizon and actually be aware of EVERYTHING that’s going on – both good and bad. If you don’t, it’s like you’re walking around with blinders on. I mean, I often talk about people who are kind of blind to all the good things that are happening, but having blinders on that won’t let you see the painful things that are going on around you is just as bad. You don’t want to have any blinders on at all. You want to be able to see everything, the full picture. That’s a wise and mature person.
Think about it, do you really want to be a person who doesn’t believe that the holocaust happened? Do you want to be someone who denies things like global warming, racism, sexism and so forth? People like that exist. Do you really want to be one of them? Wouldn’t you much rather be someone who is aware of those things and actually does something about them? Wouldn’t you much rather be someone who makes the world a better place than someone who covers their eyes and ears and pretends everything’s fine?
The people who make this world a better place are the people who KNOW everything that’s wrong with this world. It’s like that line from A Course in Miracles: Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved. You have to first know that there’s a problem in order to solve it. The people who don’t believe that racism is a problem, are the ones who’re not doing anything about it. And as you know, we need people who do something about it! And we need to BE these people. So it’s good to be aware of the pain. You just have to find a way to deal with it. So rather than being numbed by the pain, you are stirred into action. And that’s where self awareness comes in. For example, you have to know in what kind of medium you can absorb the news so you’re aware, but not paralyzed by pain. For me that means I read the news, I don’t watch them. Of course you can’t always decide how bad news will find you, but when you can, make sure to do so in a way that won’t numb you.
God’s will for you is perfect happiness. If it were up to Him, you’d live in perfect peace. But people have free will. And think about it, if we didn’t, that would mean that God would force us around. Then we would be like His puppets. But we’re not. We are free. God is love. Love can only love; never force.
The fact of the matter is, this world isn’t perfect. Now what I’m about to say might go against your current belief system in a big way, and I don’t want to get too metaphysical with you, but please keep reading because it was a very important realization for me that God did NOT create this world. As a matter of fact, it has nothing to do with Him. As you know, really bad things are happening in this world. And even aside from that, nothing in this world is eternal. Everything that lives will some day die. Here today, gone tomorrow. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. So how could that be the creation of an all loving God? How could you reconcile the belief in an all loving God with all the messed up shit that’s happening in the world? Even somewhat “little” things like the fact that you can get sick, you can get hurt, you can feel pain. How could that be the will or the creation of an all loving God?
And this is where reading the book The Disappearance Of The Universe really helped me. Suddenly it all made sense. A Course in Miracles teaches us that God did not create this world. He created heaven, and wanted that to be our home. But we left. We walked out of the garden of eden so to speak. And instead we made this world, where we could be separate from God and from each other. This is the world of the ego. It’s not ultimately real because, again, God did not create it. So that means, no matter what happens here, we will overcome it, and we will return home to heaven again. But while we’re here, this world is our reality. And as you know, the pain is real. No one could convince you that it’s not. That’s why even though this world isn’t ultimate reality, it is still important that we make this world as peaceful as we can. Because suffering is real. It is senseless, but it is real. We will overcome it, but in the moment it fucking hurts.
A Course in Miracles says this world is like a dream. And it is our job to transform it from the nightmare it is now, into a happy dream. And from there it’s but a tiny step to heaven. And the Course says, God Himself will take the final step.
I remember when I first read that God did not create this world, it shattered my whole belief system. I didn’t even know that I believed in it that much until I read that page in The Disappearance Of The Universe. I was tempted to put the book down and never look at it again, but even though I was shocked, it definitely made a lot of sense, and it actually made me feel much better about God. So I kept reading. And it’s like all of these big life questions that I had all my life, and that I heard from a lot of other people too, were finally answered. It all made perfect sense. And suddenly I could see much more clearly.
That’s why I recommend reading The Disappearance Of The Universe. It explains everything in such a down to earth way. And if you think about it this way, if God didn’t create this world, He’s not responsible for any of the pain or heartache you experienced, but He’s actually trying to guide you back home to heaven which is a state of complete oneness, love, peace, and harmony. How does that make you feel about Him? Because a lot of people are harboring resentments against God because they believe He’s at least somewhat responsible for the pain in their life and in the world. What if that wasn’t true? What if He was your ticket and your guide out of this madness?
As I said, God doesn’t force. You are free to do whatever you want. His will for you is perfect happiness, so He’d love for you to stay safe in heaven. But you left, so even though that wasn’t His will for you, He followed you here, because He would never leave you comfortless. And He’s trying everything He can to get you to come back home. A Course in Miracles says God created the Holy Spirit (our intuition) as an answer to our leaving, so we would have a built-in guide and compass to guide us back home. And so even though we’re seeing ourselves as separate from God, His loving voice would be forever in our minds. Always there, always accessible, ready to help.
Is it not strange that you believe to think you made the world you see is arrogance? God made it not. Of this you can be sure. What can He know of the ephemeral, the sinful and the guilty, the afraid, the suffering and lonely, and the mind that lives within a body that must die? You but accuse Him of insanity, to think He made a world where such things seem to have reality. He is not mad. Yet only madness makes a world like this.
To think that God made chaos, contradicts His Will, invented opposites to truth, and suffers death to triumph over life; all this is arrogance. Humility would see at once these things are not of Him.
–A Course in Miracles
So what can we do to make this world a better place? First of all, never give up. Follow your intuition, keep putting one foot in front of the other, keep hustling, keep working for change, put yourself out there, don’t settle, believe that you’re worthy of greatness, and act on that belief. That’s how we change the world. By first of all being aware of the problems, and then working on fixing them, one day at a time. And never give up. That’s how we can transform this nightmare of a world into a happy dream. And then we go back home.
I said before that the first change, before dreams disappear, is that your dreams of fear are changed to happy dreams.
