Recently I got a notification from twitter telling me it’s my 6 year twitter anniversary. Now for most people that wouldn’t be a big deal, but for me it marks the time when I started to change my life completely. The idea to create a twitter account is one of the clearest intuitive hits I can remember. It didn’t make any sense. I didn’t even know what twitter was! But something in me kept pushing to START A TWITTER ACCOUNT DAMMIT!
Looking back I think it’s so funny. I talked about this with so many people because it was ALWAYS on my mind. Eventually one of my friends said, “Just do it.” And I headed over to the twitter website then and there. I had no idea who to follow because no one I knew was using twitter. But eventually I found a couple of people to follow, and over time I was led to the next person, and the next person, and the next person,… And, as ridiculous as it might sound, a whole new world opened up before me. And that was an answered prayer.
At the time I was praying for guidance every day. I felt so lost, I didn’t know who I was, why I was here, and what to do with my life. All I knew is I was unhappy. But somehow I knew that my happy self still had to be somewhere inside of me. I knew she wasn’t lost forever. And more importantly, I knew that God’s plan wasn’t for me to be sad and unhappy for the rest of my life. I knew He had the answers. I knew He had a plan. And more than anything, I wanted to follow that road. I didn’t know where it would lead me, but I knew that God had great things in store for me, and I wanted nothing – NOTHING – except for God’s will to be done in my life. I was completely humble and open for guidance. So it came. For me, a lot of it came through twitter. We’re living in the computer age, after all.
Reading those people’s tweets, their blog posts, their books, watching their videos, listening to their workshops was so very healing for me at the time. So many of the things that were instrumental in me becoming the person I am today were introduced to me through twitter. The Institute For Integrative Nutrition where I got my certificate as a Holistic Health Coach, A Course in Miracles, and so many blogs and resources that just led me step by step by step to the person I am today and the life I’m living today. And it all started with that one tiny action of creating a twitter account. Now here’s the message I want to convey to you:
FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION
“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
So often we disregard divine guidance because it doesn’t make any sense to us. That is a huge mistake! There was NO WAY for me to know that starting a twitter account would have such a monumental impact on the way my life would unfold. No way! And the way I see it, divine guidance always comes to us in the form of an incremental roadmap. Meaning, it starts at the beginning. And only after we’ve completed step 1, do we receive guidance for step 2.
For example, you might be praying for a new job, a romantic relationship, or a new house. And the guidance you receive day in and day out is for you to start cleaning up your diet, eating healthier, or to start working out. If you’d follow that guidance you’d be led on a trajectory that would lead you to that new job, that new relationship, or that new house. But you keep ignoring it thinking, “I don’t have time for this! I need to find a new job/partner/house!” And that’s how we’re making life so much harder for ourselves. Because we keep ignoring our intuition.
Then we’re upset and we’re wondering, “Why aren’t things happening for me? What am I doing wrong?” The answer: you’re not following your guidance. You can clearly recognize divine guidance because it’s those repetitive thoughts, feelings and ideas that you just can’t shake. No day goes by without you thinking, I should______. Yes, you should!
Then things would start happening for you. And then you follow the next step, and the next step, and the next step, and soon enough you’ll be looking back on your life, and it will all make sense.
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”
It probably won’t make sense in the moment. That’s where the term “leap of faith” comes in. You just have to take that first step, even though you won’t know where it will lead you. Stepping into the unknown can feel scary, but that fear will subside as soon as you take that step. Then you’ll realize, “Oh, this wasn’t so bad. Why was I so worried?” And the more steps you take, the less scary and more natural it will become.
A leap of faith is by definition a step outside your comfort zone. But that’s the point! We’re wasting our lives away staying within the confines of our limited comfort zone because we’re afraid of what lies beyond. When in truth, everything you want is outside your comfort zone! With every little step you take, you are expanding the borders of your comfort zone. And I’ve come to believe that that’s the point of life.
Living in fear and confinement – that’s prison. But when you can take fear out of the equation and just see it as an exploration – that’s when life becomes fun. If you don’t like where one particular step takes you, you can always go back, regroup and try a different direction! So often we’re paralyzed by fear because we think that every decision we take is final and there’s no way to return. Come on! Piercings can be taken out, jobs can be quit, cities can be left, twitter accounts can be taken down,… It’s all good! Every moment is an opportunity for you to choose again. Even if you’re unhappy with the decision you made just one second ago, in this present moment you can make a different choice.
That’s good for you to know, so you can relax a bit, but the truth is, when you follow your intuition, you won’t want to go back. Because your intuition leads you to places and experiences beyond your wildest dreams. All you gotta do is take that first step.
Now I would love to know…
Have you found inspiration in an unlikely place before?
What’s a repetitive idea or thought you can’t shake at the moment?
What do you keep thinking about, but haven’t acted on yet?
Could it be your intuition talking to you?
Why haven’t you taken that step yet?
Come on down to the comment section and write it out.
Sharing these things with others, writing them out, or even saying them out loud really takes the fear out of it and gives us more clarity.
